Help at home

The home stuff I get called for most — and a homelab habit I'm a little too into. All of it fixed at the source, not patched over, and explained so you actually understand what changed.

rate:I'm still finalizing a flat house-call rate — ask when you reach out and I'll give you a straight number for your situation, no surprises.

Home network & Wi-Fi

Dead zones in the back bedroom, buffering in the garage, a router that reboots itself every night — I fix the actual cause instead of throwing another extender at it. Mesh, wiring where it counts, and smart placement.

done:Full-strength Wi-Fi in every room you actually use, and a network that doesn't choke when the whole house is streaming at once.

Parental controls that stick

Most parental controls live in one app the kids disable in a weekend. I set filtering and time limits at the router, so the rules cover every phone, tablet, and console in the house — then layer on device-level rules where they help.

done:The tablet locks itself at 9pm and YouTube is filtered at the router, so a factory reset doesn't get around it.

Whole-home ad blocking

Ad and tracker blocking at the network level, so it protects every device that connects — smart TVs included, which browser extensions can't touch. This is genuinely my wheelhouse; I run it on my own network every day.

done:Fewer ads, faster pages, and a smart TV that finally stops phoning home — automatically, on every device.

Homelab & media servers

the fun one

This is the one I get genuinely excited about. Your own media server streaming your library to every screen, self-hosted apps that replace a subscription or two, and your data on hardware you own. Unraid, media automation, the works — set up cleanly so it just works.

done:Your whole movie and music library streams to any TV or phone in the house, running on a server that's yours and built to stay maintainable.

House calls & general help

The catch-all: a new laptop to set up, a printer that won't cooperate, a smart-home gadget that won't connect, a pop-up you don't trust. I show up, sort it out, and explain what happened in plain English. No ticket queue, no phone tree.

done:The thing that was broken works, you know why it broke, and you know exactly who to email next time — no drama about reaching me.
